Celebrating Authentic Representation: A Night with Benjamin Law

Being represented authentically means more than simply appearing on screen — it means having the power, agency and cultural space to tell our own stories. Stories shaped by our lived experience, our languages and accents, our families, our humour, our heartbreaks. Stories that reflect our truth.

When Benjamin Law created his groundbreaking comedy series The Family Law, he changed what was possible for so many of us. With an award-winning Asian Australian ensemble cast, the show brought our voices — our real accents, our cultural nuances, our family dynamics — into living rooms across the country. For countless creatives, it was the first time we saw a version of ourselves on screen and felt that sense of belonging, not just in front of the camera but behind it.

That’s why it felt especially meaningful to welcome Benjamin Law to our Screen Presence event on the 16th of October — not only as a brilliant writer, broadcaster and cultural leader, but as someone whose work has inspired an entire generation of Asian Australian storytellers to take up space and claim their narratives.

Benjamin has been with us from the very beginning, attending our inaugural Screen Presence gathering in 2023. We’re deeply grateful for his continued support, generosity and belief in what we are building.

A heartfelt thank you as well to our MC for the evening, Christopher Kam, Head of Development at Typecast, whose thoughtful hosting anchored the conversation beautifully.

This event was made possible through the generous support of our sponsors:
National Foundation for Australia-China Relations (NFACR) 澳中基金会,
Museum of Chinese Australian History,
Konpira Maru Wines,
and our incredible volunteers — Laurie Fletcher, Laura Him, Sydney Reyes, Wilari Tedjosiswoyo and Ash Winarizal — whose energy and dedication keep Screen Presence thriving.
